We place markers to identify historic sites in Roswell. Our Markers program began in the early 1980s. New markers are placed when a property is deemed of historic significance. Currently, we have 34 markers around Roswell.
Very soon, we hope to add a map of marker locations to this web page. Please come back soon and look for that info.
In 2010, our Society worked with the City of Roswell to install interpretive panels at all three Historic District cemeteries. This one is from Old Roswell Cemetery. Additional panels can be seen at Roswell's Presbyterian and Founders' cemeteries. A cemetery brochure can be picked up at the Historic Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Historic Cemetery Recording and Care
Members of the Roswell Historical Society have worked since 2007 to record graves in our historic cemeteries. We have completed the work at Founders’, Presbyterian, and Old Roswell. We are still in the process of entering this info into a searchable database that will be available at our Research Library and Archives. We hope to work at some of the city’s other historic cemeteries in the coming years.
We have supported Roswell’s efforts to preserve and interpret our historic district cemeteries by suppling matching funding needed for a Preserve America grant. This resulted in a professional assessment of all three cemeteries. These reports are available at our Research Library and Archives.
Additionally, our Society has supported two Eagle Scout projects that greatly benefitted two of our historic cemeteries, Pleasant Hill (an historic African-American cemetery) and Old Roswell Cemetery. In 2010, we began working with the Elkins Pointe Middle School Historical Society at Old Roswell Cemetery. The students cleaned tombstones and carried out general grounds maintenance. This work will continue in 2011.

A member of our Society arranged for the donation of ground penetrating radar services at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Elkins Pointe Middle schoolers cleaned gravestones at Old Roswell in 2010.
Alex Jagrowski worked toward his Eagle Scout rating at Old Roswell in 2011. Here he is working on a retaining wall at the cemetery's entrance.
Part of Alex's project included the rebuilding on a brick wall around one of the cemetery plots.
Society members recorded graves

Sharing the history of Roswell is our passion and a commitment to youth education is a major part of the mission of the Roswell Historical Society. Since 1990, the Society has annually donated more than one thousand copies of its children’s activity book “Roswell: Our City’s Heritage” to third grade students in Roswell public schools. Every year hundreds of students take guided walking tours of Roswell’s Historic District with our trained volunteer guides who interpret the history of Roswell and the historic buildings along the route. Cub Scouts, Brownies, Boy and Girl Scouts earn merit badges by studying Roswell’s rich history with the help of Society walking tour guides. We can provide in-school programs on Roswell History to augment teachers’ lesson plans.
We can also provide speakers for other organizations. If you would like to arrange a group tour for adult or youth groups, please call: 770-640-3253.
We mount periodic exhibits with historic themes. We publish on historical topics. Our publications are available at the on this website, our Society office and at select retail locations in Roswell.
